Traditional Granny Square

materials:

any size hook
any amount, any color, any weight yarn

notes:

For those of you who are unaware, granny square afghans may be made from one large square, or many smaller squares--joined together by crochet or some other means.

special instructions:

to work corner: (3 double crochet, chain 1, 3 double crochet) in corner chain-1 space
in general, space refers to the space created between groups of 3 stitches
beginning chain-3 of each Rnd. counts as double crochet
join all round with slip stitch in 3rd chain

pattern:

chain 7-10 (depending on how tight you crochet, if your chain tends to be loose, use 7)
join with slip stitch to form ring
(slip stitch in ring -- optional)
Rnd 1: chain 3, [2 double crochet, chain 1, (3 double crochet, chain 1) 3 times] in ring; 4 corner spaces -- you may wish to crochet over starting tail with this round
Rnd 2: chain 3, skip to corner space, work corner 3 times, in last corner space (3 double crochet, chain 1, 2 double crochet) join with slip stitch allowing beginning chain to form 3rd double crochet of group; 4 spaces, 4 corner spaces
Rnd 3: (slip stitch in space -- optional), chain 3, 2 double crochet in same space, (work corner, 3 double crochet in next space) 3 times, work corner, join; 8 spaces, 4 corner spaces
Rnd 4: (slip stitch in space -- optional), chain 3, skip to next space, (3 double crochet in each space to corner, work corner) 4 times, 3 double crochet in each space with last group formed by 2 double crochet + beginning chain-3
Rnd 5: (slip stitch in space -- optional), chain 3, 2 double crochet in same space, (3 double crochet in each space to corner, work corner) 4 times, 3 double crochet in each space to beginning chain, join
repeat Rnds. 4 & 5 until square is desired size (number of rounds, or measurement)
finish off.
add border if desired
weave in end if desired. if you are adding a border or joining with other squares, end may be worked in later.
