Hilo* Star

materials:

Size 10 crochet cotton
Size “0” (zero) hook
 

special instructions:

no chain single crochet (no ch sc) – insert hook in same loop previous st is worked in, draw up a loop (this forms your foundation ch), yo, pull through loop, yo, pull through both loops on hook

patterns:

ch 8, join w/ sl st to form ring
Rnd 1: ch 3, * (dc, tr, ch 2, tr, dc) in ring, dc in ring, rep from * around omitting last dc in 5th rep, sl st in 3rd beg ch; 5 ch-sps
Rnd 2: sl st in next 2 sts, (2 sc, ch 2, 2 sc) in ch-sp, [sl st in ea st to next ch-sp, (2 sc, ch 2, 2 sc) in ch-sp)] around, sl st in next 2 sts, sl st to finish off in next st; 5 ch-sps
Rnd 3: join w/ sc to any ch-sp, 8 no ch sc, * sc in next ch-sp, 8 no ch sc, rep from * around, join w/ sl st to starting sc; 45 sc
Rnd 4: join w/ dc in 4th st of any no ch series, 3 more dc in same st, 4 dc in next st, ch 8, * 4 dc in 4th st of next no ch series, 4 dc in next st, ch 8, rep from * around, join w/ sl st to starting dc
Rnd 5:
1st 5 pineapples
1st pineapples: ch 4, (dc, ch 1) bet ea dc, dc in last dc, turn, sc in 1st ch-sp, (ch 3, sc) in each ch-sp across, * turn, sl st in 1st ch, sc in ch-sp, (ch 3, sc) in ea ch-sp across, rep from * until there is only 1 ch-sp when you’ve completed your row.
Finish off
2nd – 5th pineapples: join w/ dc to first dc of next dc group, (ch 1, dc) between ea dc and in last dc, turn, sc in 1st ch-sp, complete same as 1st pineapple
Rnd 6:
next 5 pineapples
in last loop of 1st row of ch-loops on any pineapple, join w/ sc, 8 dc in ch-8 loop from Rnd 4, sc in 1st loop of 1st row of ch-loops on next pineapple, ch 3, sc in next ch-loop up the side of the completed pineapple, turn, (dc, ch 1) bet ea dc - including bet 1st sc and beg ch, omitting ch after last dc, sc in 1st unused ch-loop on completed pineapple, turn, sc in ch-sp, (ch 3, sc) in ea ch-sp across, finish as with all other pineapples
next 4 pineapples completed in same manner; 10 pineapples total
Rnd 7: join w/ sc to top of any pineapple, 12 no ch sc, * sc in top of next pineapple, 12 no ch sc, rep from * around, join w/ sl st to starting sc
Rnd 8: sl st in next st, ch 4, * dc in next st, (ch 1, dc) in ea no ch sc, skip sc in top of pineapple, rep from * around, join w/ sl st to 3rd beg ch
Finish off.
Weave in ends.

* Hilo, pronounce hee-low, is a smaller variety of pineapple, since this doily utilizes small pineapples to form a star, I thought this was a very appropriate name when Lisa suggested it.
