Retirement Granny Afghan

materials:

2 or 3 - 8 oz. skeins: dark brown, warm brown, buff fleck, cornmeal, rose pink
size "J" hook

notes:

this pattern will make a square afghan that does not have straight sides. it is an appropriate size to be a queen-king bedspread, but is relatively light for it's size.

yarn amounts and final size depend on your personal usage. June and I had squares that were approximately 6 inches square. 6 inch squares should take about 5 rounds.

joining:

with dark brown,
each square gets a border of 1 round of half double crochet
squares are joined with half double crochet

border:

Rnd 1: single crochet around with dark brown, at outward corners--3 single crochet in corner stitch, at indented corners--skip corner stitch
Rnd 2: with corn meal, single crochet around putting 3 single crochet in each outward pointing corner, skip 1 stitch in indented corners
Rnd 3: with rose, repeat Rnd 2
Rnd 4: with dark brown, work (single crochet, picot) in each single crochet around
(picot is worked: chain 3, slip stitch in 3rd chain from hook)
