Star Quilt Granny

materials:

size "J" hook
yarn needle
1-2 -- 8 oz. skeins each: royal blue, soft navy, light green, pale mint
3-4 -- 8 oz. skeins soft white

notes:

on layout "\" and "/" denote which way the diagonal split between colors will run
all squares are only 2 rounds

to work 2-color squares:

special instructions:

to work corner: (3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc) in ch-1 sp
to work 1st change corner: (3 dc -- in last dc join new color and pull it up for last yarn over of st, ch 1, 3 dc) in ch-1 sp
to work 2nd change corner: (3 dc -- changing back to first color in last yarn over of 3rd st, ch 1, 3 dc) in ch-1 sp

pattern:

ch 7-10 (if your chain tends to be tight, ch 10)
join with sl st to form ring
(sl st in ring--optional)
Rnd 1: ch 3, 2 dc in ring -- changing to new color in last yarn over of 2nd st, ch 1, 3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc -- changing back to first color in 3rd st, ch 1, 3 dc, ch 1, join to beginning ch with sl st
Rnd 2: ch 3, work 1st change corner in next ch-1 sp, work corner in next ch-1 sp, work 2nd change corner in next ch-1 sp, work corner in last ch-1 sp, allowing beginning ch-3 to become last dc
finish off

joining:

squares are sewn with whipstitch, or some other stitch. stitches can be obvious for decorative purposes.

stitching colors:

soft navy stitches when joining navy to any other color
royal blue stitches when joining royal blue to soft white
light green stitches when joining light green to pale mint or soft white
pale mint stitches when joining pale mint to soft white
match color when joining to sides of the same color

border:

join soft white with single crochet, single crochet around with 3 stitches in each corner stitch
